Gender Reversal

Gender reversal to me is one of those exciting yet challenging task in make up. Well, the name says it all doesn't it? Reversing the gender through make up. Obviously, theatre actors do this to have the look of the opposite sex. A man being a woman and vice versa. The most interesting part is that when the audience doesn't even recognize the difference! Although, make up only doesn't make it work. The acting, as well as the costumes, help the make up in being more realistic and believable.

Theatrical Make Up

Make up has evolved in being the most important element in every theater performances in every part of the world. During the days of the great Greek Theaters, the face paintings did all the hard work in showing their emotions and expressions. Make up was unnecassary. Actors also wore evarious masks to portray another gender, age or entirely different likeness.

Since then, make up has played a major role in theater performances. This reason is that it can be the perfect way for an actor to portray his or her characters on stage. Characterization also plays a part in this process. If a male actor has to become a female character on stage, he must transform himself completely in able to make the audience believe he's a woman. Including also the age factor, the skin tone and all the elements that he has to take into account in being that character.

Other than that, advancements in stage lighting technology required stage make up to evolve beyond one overall face colour to a multidimensional craft. Once gas lighting, limelight, and electric light were introduced to theaters, a need emerged for new make up materials and more skillful application techniques.

Character Make Up is applied when an actor wants to be someone else that is totally different from the way he or she looks. This process need altering in every aspect so that the appearance will suit the new character. If the character is mean, kind, fat, thin, beautiful or ugly, the features of the actor must be changed in order to match it. Only make up will no do in portraying the character. So, thats when different methods such as wigs, false teeth and facial prosthetics comes into action.

Straight Make up

Straight make up can be considered as the basic make up. Corrective make up is the other term to describe this style of make up. Corrective make up can be applied not only during performances, but also on special occasions when a woman or a girl wants to look beautiful and pretty for all the right reasons.
